Nikon Z7 II Mirrorless Camera FTZ Adapter Firmware Update How Too

Nikon Z7 II Mirrorless Camera FTZ Adapter in Studio Replacing D850. FTZ Adapter Firmware Update How Too Out of Box

Today I received my Nikon Z7 II Mirrorless Camera & Adapter, I will be using today without calibration. I will calibrate all lenses to the body by computer in the next day at the shop.

Our Shop is Paramount Camera Repair I’m not there as much as Garrett as this studio is my full time. Especially now with Covid 19 it is important for me to limit contact. Our calibration information can be found here Computer Calibration Information Once I get the calibrations done I will update this blog, but for now will be doing out of box testing.

Right out of box, the battery was dead so that needed a full charge and the FTZ adapter firmware requires an INESCAPABLE update. This update is required to use all your F mount glass with the FTZ adapter. You will continue to get error messages if you do not update immediately. “Sigh” That pissed me off but what do you do but, update it. So here’s how not to be frustrated like I was.

Hope this saves you from getting out in the field or having a model in to test your new gear out to find out there’s some work needed done prior to ANY shooting.

You may want a manual for reference Z7 II body: Z7 II Body Manual Firmware for your z7 II body if needed: Z7 II Body Firmware (if needed)

Walk through

If you have a D850 they use the same battery pre-charge before you body arrives. Expect the firmware upgrade and have it downloaded and ready to go.

You need to get the update from Nikon’s site. A FTZ manual can be found here FTZ Manual

FTZ Firmware can be found here FTZ ADAPTER FIRMWARE

You will have to accept the end user license and your ready to go with the download.

Remember to have the adapter on the camera and whatever memory card its saved to is the only one in your camera at the time of updating. I use the card slot by preference but card reader works just as well.

Create a folder on the computer hard disk and name it as desired.

  1. Download F-FTZ-V0110W.exe to the folder created in Step 1.

  2. Run F-FTZ-V0110W.exe to extract the following file to a folder named “FTZUpdate”:
    • MAFTZ0110.bin (the mount adapter firmware)

  3. Using a card slot or card reader, copy “MAFTZ0110.bin” to a memory card that has been formatted in the camera.
Note: Be sure to copy the firmware to the root (top-most) directory of the memory card. The camera will not recognize the new firmware if it is placed in a folder under the root directory.

  4. Attach the FTZ mount adapter to the camera.

  5. Insert the memory card into the camera and turn the camera on.

  6. Select SETUP MENU > Firmware version and follow the on-screen instructions to perform the firmware update.

  7. When a message is displayed stating that the update is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.

  8. Turn the camera on and confirm that the firmware has been updated to the new version.

Then you’re set to head out and enjoy your new gear.

One thing is this body is a baby compared to it’s DSLR Cousins. My D850 and D810 are much more beefy and I like that. This itty bitty thing will take a while to get use to and I’m sure I won’t care for it without a grip in the long run. This will be nice in studio but I’m sure i’ll be using the D850 still for wildlife and sports when looking at the specs. For video though, this will be the chosen one. If I wasn’t primarily a studio shooter I would have waited for the rumored z8/z9. In fact it’s rumored 5 full frames are being tested and headed to market so we will see when official announcements happen.
